Trojan Installed on SmartPhoneSpam, E-mail and the Omnipresent Internet

E-mail is probably the most universal form of communication for Internet users. It’s built into almost every device we use, be it tablets, phones, and computers. It’s almost like a digital ID. We use it to sign-in into other accounts, shop, and manage applications. Our e-mail address is the first thing that is assigned to us in this time of the digital workplace. Like the air we breathe, the Internet is everywhere and by default so is e-mail.

Spam – A Major Security Hazard

The question almost all e-mail subscribers ask themselves when they sign-up is: “Is there a catch?” Unfortunately, the answer is “yes”. E-mail is not a secure form of communication. Add to this the additional security hazard of spam.

Since the Internet is everywhere, so is spam. Junk mail or spam isn’t just regular trash like it would be in the snail-mail world. It leads to unnecessary loss of productive time and can be distracting just like traditional mail. It is tedious to go through tons of unwanted e-mail and clean up your in-box.

The notoriety of spam goes beyond being a minor work hazard; it can lead to click-bait. An outsider could gain access to your ID and personal information and it could lead to identity theft. The e-mail subscriber could also end up with multiple viruses infecting the network or computer system.

Excalibur Provides Barracuda Spam Filtering

The Excalibur Technology team ensures with the added benefit of spam filtering, we’re able to save our clients not only productive work time, but also save them from all the security issues that could occur.

Barracuda Spam Filtering Services that we’ve recently upgraded, throws up some concerning numbers. Almost 75% to 80% of e-mails received by clients are spam.

Over the period that we have used Barracuda to filter spam, only 20% of all traffic are legitimate e-mails received by our clients. Here is an example of the traffic summary report :

The other issue with spam mail is that it is going to continue to grow if even a fraction of recipients continues to click on it since most of it is commercial. The spammers end up making money and the problem is perpetuated. This means the ratio of spam vs legitimate e-mail is going to get higher and more skewed with passing time.
